Treating skin cancer with Mohs micrographic surgery

At Alabama Dermatology and Rejuvenation Center in Jasper, Alabama, patients diagnosed with skin cancer may be worried about how they can restore their health and reduce their risk of serious complications or death from their new cancer diagnosis. Dr. Tony Adar is a board-certified dermatologist and a board-certified Mohs micrographic surgeon who can provide an evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of skin cancer.

What causes skin cancer?

The main culprit is ultraviolet (UV) radiation from either the sun or tanning beds. Other factors can increase your risk for skin cancer, including a weakened immune system, exposure to certain chemicals, or a family history of skin cancer.

One common type of skin cancer is squamous cell carcinoma, which often appears as scaly patches on sun-exposed areas, including the face and hands. Another type is basal cell carcinoma, which typically presents as an area that looks like a flesh-colored pearl or small blood vessel on the head or neck. And finally, melanoma can present as a dark spot on the skin with uneven edges but can also appear under nail beds or in mucous membranes.

Is there an effective skin cancer surgery for full removal?

A highly recommended course of treatment for many of our patients is the excision of the cancer cells with Mohs micrographic surgery. This procedure allows for removing cancer cells while leaving as much of the healthy tissue as possible.

During Mohs surgery, Dr. Tony Adar removes very thin layers of cancer-containing skin, one at a time, and examines them under a microscope to ensure all cancer cells have been eliminated. This process is repeated over until no cancer cells are present.

Why choose Mohs micrographic surgery for skin cancer treatment?

There are several advantages to this type of surgery, including its high success rate (up to 99%), minimal scarring, and the ability to treat more significant or harder-to-reach cancers in areas like the face, hands, feet, or genitals.
