Understanding cryotherapy as a way of removing warts and skin tags
At Alabama Dermatology and Rejuvenation Center in Jasper, Alabama, our board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Tony Adar, regularly sees patients who are interested in removing unwanted growths, skin tags, and warts. Depending on when these form, they can be removed with the assistance of a professional. One popular method of removal is cryotherapy.
What is cryotherapy?
Dr. Adar describes cryotherapy as a treatment that uses extremely cold liquid nitrogen to freeze and remove growths on the skin. It can also be used for other dermatological concerns such as warts, skin tags, sunspots, and actinic keratosis (pre-cancerous lesions).
Is cryotherapy painful?
Cryotherapy may cause a stinging or burning sensation during the application. However, it is typically not considered to be a painful treatment. Our patients often report feeling only minimal discomfort during the process.
What are some cryotherapy benefits?
- Cryotherapy offers a quick and effective solution for removing unwanted skin growths.
- Cryotherapy is non-invasive and requires little to no downtime, allowing patients to resume daily activities immediately after the treatment.
- Cryotherapy can also improve the appearance of the treated area by leaving behind smoother and more even-toned skin.
How long does cryotherapy take?
The length of time for cryotherapy will vary depending on the size and number of growths being treated. On average, each session takes about 10-15 minutes. Some patients may require multiple sessions to remove the growth entirely.
What can I expect after cryotherapy treatment?
It is common for there to be redness and swelling in the treated area immediately following cryotherapy. This should subside within a few days, and the growths will start to scab over. It may take several weeks for the scabs to heal fully and for the results to be visible. As with any procedure, it is essential to follow post-treatment care instructions provided by our team to ensure a reduced risk of complications.
